Ask an Engineer

This is the place where you can ask those questions you still have about engineering careers.  You can read profiles of practicing engineers in the I'm An Engineer section and ask them a question directly, or you can submit a question here to have EngineerGirl staff try to find the right person to answer you.

Since other people may have already asked the question on your mind, please take time to search through the questions and answers to see what others have already said about your topic. You may also find the list of FAQs about Engineering helpful.  These answers were not provided directly by engineers in the directory, but they will give you a basic understanding of what you need to know about an engineering career.

If your question is for the EngineerGirl Team please first take time to review the Resource FAQs that cover the basics of what we can provide for you from EngineerGirl.

Also, since we cannot give you actual engineering advice, if you need help designing that booster rocket for your own spacecraft or other project, you may find a resource on this list of other Engineering Q&A sites, and we encourage you to seek the services of a professional engineer for any engineering advice you may require.

I just feel like I am not "smart" enough to be successful in that field sometimes. Reason being is because it is such broad field.

Hello, I am in the final year to completing a bachelor's in Physics (UK) and I really want to study Aerospace engineering for a Masters. From what I can see most universities prefer Aerospace undergrads for those courses, so I am at a disadvantage. I was wondering if anyone has ever done a similar transfer before, and if you have any suggestions - for applying to universities or in general. Thank you :)

I have questions regarding the job of mechanical engineering . I have studied abroad because I used to live in Portugal. I studied in the University of Coimbra. I have a bachelors in mechanical engineering, and I was wondering if with a bachelors from another country, Or if a masters is more beneficial. If you could please give me more information about this I would greatly appreciate it. Jackie Barreira

Hi Jordan, If you want to create make-up, a chemical engineering degree is a great choice, and you are never too young to get started if you think you might want to be an engineer. To get started now, see if you can attend summer programs and camps that ...

I attended vocational high school in department of analytical chemistry also i ever had internship as a chemical analyst and worked as a microbiology analyst. My previous degree is a BA in civil engineering with a lot of courses in programming & electronic technology that my employer has paid for. I've worked as a controls engineer for 5 years now. If someone has taken this path, or could provide strategies on how to execute this goal I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Hey (:, I was just curious on if & how did you get your foot in the door as far being an aerospace engineering, meaning did you do everything on your own, network, internships? Because right now im trying to pursue working for NASA since not a lot of women are known to be working in this field. Im a junior now, & I just turned 17 but I just want to get any leadway I possibly can right now. Thank You So Much.

Hi, I am tied between some careers including industrial design and mechanical engineering. I am pretty right/left brain balanced so I love sciences/logic and the arts/creativity almost equally. I don't really like math (I did until it stopped making sense. I'm willing to persevere through math classes in college, though i'm not sure if i want calculus or higher to be a part of my everyday job) and i'm not a fan of physics. However I love inventing and building things and understanding how ...

Abby, calculus is one of those things I look back at associated with my college career and realize I never use it in my day to day work as an engineer. I use math daily, but it is the match that "makes sense" focusing on the basics of addition, ...

Good day, Engr. Alicia. I have already graduated with a degree that is far related from civil engineering. I followed my parents' decision for me at that time. But now that I'm making my own money, I want to follow my heart's calling. I have always wanted to be a civil engineer. My mum is an engineer, as well and she didn't think I would survive engineering classes because I am not that good at maths and physics. But when I look at the buildings, bridges, tunnels, and contemplate how those are ...

The only thing I've realized is that I am not such a good coder, maybe that's why I haven't got placed yet in any of the companies that has visited my campus. Now that I know CSE isn't for me, can I pursue in Aeronautics? How can I validate ...
