Special fields and Interdisciplinary Engineer

There are plenty of traditional, nontraditional, and interdisciplinary fields of engineering that might just match up with your interests, whether they involve design, architecture, law, business, geography, psychology, or education. As an acoustical engineer, you might develop a state-of-the-art sound studio, or as a sports engineer you might create equipment that tests the performance of athletes.  You might also work in “human factors engineering,” a fascinating field that takes human behavior and psychology into account in developing products and systems.

Salary

The starting salary for engineers in special and interdisciplinary fields varies significantly depending on the specialty, but can range anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000 (B.S. degree).

Examples

  • As an oceanographic engineer, design instruments that can map the ocean floor
  • As a fire protection engineer, develop the fire exit layout for a school
  • As a forensic engineer, investigate a suspicious explosion at a manufacturing plant
  • As a package engineer, design a new bottle for hand cream that increases the shelf life of the product
  • As a systems engineer, design and coordinate large and complex projects known as systems
  • As a safety engineer, inspect a chemical manufacturing company, making sure that workers aren’t exposed to dangerous fumes

    Remote Presence
Robots allow critical care physicians to be in two places at once.
There are few people who need to be in two places at the same time more than physicians, and thanks to some remarkable robots known as remote presence (RP) devices doctors now have the ability. The robots are particularly useful for stroke patients where time is of the essence. They are designed to have video and sound transmitting capabilities so victims of stroke can have access to professional physician diagnoses 24/7 via teleconference. “The neuro-stroke robots allow me to diagnose and initiate treatment within those critical minutes [of stroke],” says Dr. Ignacio Carrillo-Nunez, a doctor who demonstrated one of the robots at St. Mary Medical Center of Long Beach, California.
The RP devices allow collaboration between hospital staff members and a remote physician, no matter how far apart they are located. To receive immediate feedback from a physician, the staff members simply “beam ...

    Wearable Technology
While engineering and fashion may not appear to go together at first glance, there are few fields in the world where engineers are not making a contribution, and fashion is no exception. In fact, recent advances mean that the contribution of engineers to the fashion industry may be even more important in the coming years.

I love being an engineer and being really creative...Part of my job is looking at the design and seeing if it’s even feasible, and then looking at the manufacturing process to ensure that these difficult, complex designs are implemented.

In high school I enjoyed chemistry and math, so I earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. A better way to select a major is to find out what the job is like by talking to practicing engineers. Studying a subject in school is not the same as working in that field. Find out what motivates and satisfies you! For instance, although I enjoyed my chemistry classes, many chemical engineers are employed in the petrochemical, paper, or food industries. None of these appealed to me. I wanted a job with a more people-oriented focus.

I chose this field because of the large amount of opportunities that are offered. Being a male dominant field, there are so many opportunities for women out there. This career path also offers competitive pay which is an added bonus!

Short-term, I want to go back to IUP and earn my Doctorate in Safety. I am already trying to think of topics for my dissertation. Long-term, I want to move into academia and become a college professor so I can teach Safety and maybe inspire another girl to pursue engineering.

    Crystal Bridge
In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Crystal Bridge Conservatory is the focus of the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Engineers designed a cloud-making system to provide the necessary environment for a rainforest. A path next to a 35-foot waterfall leads up a "mountain" of rock formations, which are really latex molds from actual rock outcroppings. The conservatory is made from over 3,000 acrylic panels. It is seven stories tall and 224 feet long.
