What I Do I am the Division Chair of Engineering, Physical Science and Process Technology at a Community College. I have been teaching for 10 years, but prior to that I worked in industry as an environmental manager helping companies operate safely and in compliance with governmental regulations. Currently, my main focus is helping students prepare for careers in our area, which is rural and the main industries are in energy and agriculture.
Why Engineering? I loved science. I loved understanding the rules of nature, how did everything start, why do atoms work that way, etc. So, I studied science. I wanted to become a Mechanical Engineer, but did not get the scholarship that I needed to go to that school. I ran into a professor while headed to class one day, and he offered me a book scholarship (just enough to pay for my books) if I would help him with a research project in physics. With out that little bit of help, I don't know what would have happened. I stayed in the fundamental sciences through my Ph.D. but went to work in industry, because they had "cool" problems. It also was a bit about timing, the environmental side of things started becoming critical to industry, and they were "cool" problems, and thus, I was off to help.
School Days I have a Bachelors Degree from the University of Central Oklahoma (formerly Central State University) in Physics. A Ph.D. in Physics from Oklahoma State University and a MBA from Regis University.
My Day At Work As I am now back to teaching, most days are preparing for class or participating in class. However, I am now involved in a number of projects, working with students focused on high power rocketry, studying astronomy, and working on how communities will adjust in light of our changing climate.
Best Part During my career, there was always something different, a new challenge. I enjoyed getting out into the plants, meeting people and solving problems.
Proud Moments What am I most proud of? Being recognized as an AAAS and ACS Fellow coming from industry and a community college.
Challenges There were challenges every day. How do I solve this technical problem? Do we make this move because it will disrupt my family? How do we get our kids to school everyday? We all have them. You just take them one day at a time.
My Family My husband and I have been married for 35 years. We have two children, seven grandchildren, and two dogs. We live in rural Oklahoma on 40 acres which we lease to a person that has long horn cows and calves on the property. My daughter (with six children) is an equine manager and trainer. My son teaches at Weber State University.
Dreams and Goals My current goals are to support my students and get them into research early. I enjoy what I am doing and I hope to provide more opportunities to the students.
Inspiration I have had the opportunity to have had several great mentors. Each has provided me with unique perspectives and insights. I have a group of trusted friends that I go to when needed. And, I am very thankful to my family that keeps me grounded.
Want to be an Engineer? If you like science, stick with it. Having that fundamental understanding will empower you and help you be successful, no matter what you do in life.
